Study With Us
Our MA Woman and Child Abuse was the first of its kind in Europe, and provides a solid grounding in theoretical frameworks, policy and practice approaches. The course covers all forms of violence against women and child abuse, including sexual violence, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, trafficking and harmful practices. Reflecting our own work in CWASU, the MA explores what is known about these forms of abuse, the contexts in which they occur and the connections between them. While the main focus is on the UK, intellectual, policy and practice approaches from across the globe are also explored.
MA Structure and Delivery
To gain the Masters seven modules must be completed. Six taught modules, each worth 20 credits and a dissertation – which counts as one module but is worth 60 credits. Four core modules must be taken (see below) along with one designate module (chosen from a designated list) and one elective module -which means you can choose any postgraduate module offered by LondonMet provided it fits well with the MA overall.
All of our core modules are taught across 3, 2-day blocks (see dates below), but designate and elective modules are often delivered differently – weekly for example, you will need to check these when you come to programme your study.
The course is led and delivered by Dr Sukwhant Dhaliwal (course leader), Prof Liz Kelly, Dr Maria Garner and Jo Lovett. We also include guest lectures from prominent activists, academics and practitioners from across the field of Violence Against Women and Children.
MA Core Modules
- Violence Against Women: Issues, Research and Policy
- Sexual Violence: Causes, Consequences and Interventions
- Sexual Exploitation of Children and Young People
- Researching Violence and Evaluating Interventions

Short Courses
Our core modules are also available to take as short courses. These are particularly useful if you are considering doing the MA but want to get a taste of what we offer, or if you don’t meet the entry requirements for the MA, successful completion of a short course can be a pathway to the MA. Practitioners across the field of VAWG also find our short courses valuable for deepening their theoretical and contextual understandings and strengthening their practice.
Our programmes of study are ideal for those who are working in specialised services for women and children who have experienced violence, in policymaking or delivery at local, regional or national levels, or anyone wanting to establish careers in these sectors.
To inquire and book one of our short courses please contact the course leader Dr Sukhwant Dhaliwal s.dhaliwal1@londonmet.ac.uk
