This research review was commissioned by HMCPSI to inform their Thematic Review into the Investigation and Prosecution of Cases Involving Allegations of Rape. It incorporates a review of the literature on the reporting, investigation and prosecution of rape cases, and whilst focusing on UK research, it also draws on related international studies, where appropriate. It comprises the following:

  • introduction and context;
  • aims, objectives and methods;
  • what we know about rape and patterns of reporting;
  • understanding attrition;
  • the reporting and investigation phase;
  • the role of prosecutors;
  • the trial;
  • statute law;
  • concluding thoughts.
